DisasterWISE hosted a critical discussion on community-led versus community-centred practice. We explored the differences between these two approaches, opening up dialogue around power, consultation, knowledge, and self-determination. We asked: Had you experienced or been part of genuine community-led decision-making? Had you played a supporting role, as an ally or enabler of community-led practice? Were you working within an organisation that takes a community-centred approach?
Whether attendees were community organisers, practitioners, researchers, or simply curious – this was a space to share, question, and learn together. Together, we unpacked what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to change. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped spread the word through your networks.
DisasterWISE get-togethers are designed to bring together members of the DisasterWISE Communities Network, fostering connection, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration. These gatherings serve as essential touchpoints for members to share experiences about common challenges in disaster preparedness, response, recovery and climate adaptation initiatives.
Each month, the network hosts a one hour online gathering to discuss a topical subject. Guest speakers are invited along to share their knowledge, with an emphasis on lived experience, community-led initiatives and on supporting community resilience.
You're invited to attend monthly gatherings, the discussion is open to everyone and you're welcome to suggest speakers and topics of interest - just email connect@disasterwise.com.au
