Yesterday my region, Cobargo, on the Far South Coast of NSW, Australia, was plunged into yet another fire emergency. I watched from my home as a small puff of smoke, about 7kms to my south east, rapidly became a significant blaze: The Coolagolite Fire [Bega District News Coolagolite Fire article ]
(Coolagolite Fire - 3 Oct 2023 - just a paddock or three away from our home) Within hours the fire turned into an Emergency as it raced through bushland toward the coast - threatening neighbors homes (as I type this, we are yet to hear how many homes were lost) in the localities of Coolagolite, Cuttagee, Barragga Bay, the Murrah, Wapengo and the town of Bermagui. It was a long day and night. One edge of the fire (and we didn\'t face the thrust of the fire) came within 4kms of our home that somehow managed to survive the NYE 2019 Badja Forest Rd Fire. All of us who have faced fire emergencies have vital lived experience of preparing for, responding to and recovering from significnat disaster events - yesterday reminded me once more why this platform is essential. It\'s going to be a looooooong summer. ** Today conditions are more favourable with calmer winds and cooler temperatures - and I thank all those who reached out personally to our family yesterday - especially from the DisasterWISE communities. Resourcing and Grants 1 year, 8 months ago
While this is not a how-to for big grants - the article contains some tips for securing support (in particular creating a successful go-fund-me campaign) - using the campaign for the Cobargo Wildlife Sanctuary as the example. https://www.grantd.com.au/blog/2020/3/18/from-ashes-to-growth-how-engaging-content-changes-everything

TAKT Studio are the architects involved in the primary infrastructure rebuild and recovery project: the construction of the Cobargo Bushfire Resilience Centre on the destroyed western side of the main street of Cobargo - this is how they describe their involvement and design decisions making for the (on-going) project https://www.takt.net.au/bushfire-resilience-centre/

\'Understanding community-led disaster preparedness\' by Margot Rawsthorne - article in the Australian Journal of Emergency Management \"Community participation and leadership as a shared responsibility of emergency and disaster preparedness is receiving increasing attention. This paper offers an approach informed by complexity and community development theories to support, map and gauge community-led disaster preparedness.\" https://knowledge.aidr.org.au/resources/ajem-april-2023-understanding-community-led-disaster-preparedness/

The \'Mt Resilience\' interactive \'experience\' created by the Australian Museum is an interesting way to for users to learn how to prepare, respond and recover from a bushfire... while playing a game... https://australian.museum/learn/climate-change/mt-resilience/recover-from-bushfire/

Law Society Journal - August 2022 \"REGIONAL REPORT: COBARGO AND THE FAR SOUTH COAST More than two-and-a-half years on from the Black Summer bushfires, rebuilding physically and psychologically is still in the early stages for many communities on the NSW South Coast - and solicitors are playing a key role. The small town of Cobargo became the defining symbol of a country in crisis. Its people feel forgotten by cascading disasters since that summer but are working hard to heal and learn from the tragedy. Theirs is a story of the resilience of the human spirit.\" https://lsj.com.au/articles/grace-under-fire/

All of us who have experienced a disaster event soon learn just how hard and long the recovery and rebuild process can be. Focusing on small gains can foster hope while navigating through the hard times. Here is a link to a fantastic recovery project that was undertaken at Cobargo Public School with Year 5/6 in the aftermath of the devastating Badja Forest Rd Fire. These kids are awesome. And so is their book https://www.littlescribe.com/shop/books/the-day-she-stole-the-sun-by-cobargo-public-school/

Thanks for the update. Can you share more around how neighbours have been keeping each other informed? Is there a network there?
Keep us posted on the developments. And try uploading the photo again, maybe in a document. Sending strength.
