Supporting children after disaster in the forum Children, Youth and Families 10 months ago
I'm a massive fan of Emerging Minds, and in particular the Community Trauma Toolkit. If you have kids and are concerned about the impact on mental health and wellbeing following disaster, I recommend you take a look at the resources available in the toolkit; https://emergingminds.com.au/resources/toolkits/community-trauma-toolkit/ The resources are for other audiences too, like GP's, educators, first responders and community leaders.

Commemorations and Memorials in the forum Community Development and Engagement 12 months ago
During the February Get-Together, a conversation around disaster commemorations and memorial emerged. It would be helpful if we could continue a dialogue here around what some communities have experienced from lived expeirence, along with local council and emergency services contributions.

Putting ‘community’ in community-led approaches in the forum Community-Led Approaches 1 year, 3 months ago
Hello DisasterWISE Community :) just stumbled across this AIDR/Red Cross Webinar on "Putting 'community' in community recovery committee" - Malcolm from Strathewen is the first speaker and he highlights some incredibly valuable take-aways from the experience of Strathewen's community-led recovery post Black Saturday. Some insights include; democratic approaches to committee nominations, defining community and membership, the power of connection in overcoming obstacles, long term recovery and reimaging futures. Well worth the watch when thinking about processes, community agency and action!

There are some great resources out there for people who have experiened a disaster. Even though thinking of your own mental health and self-care gets pushed down the list of things to do, it is absolutely essential to take stock and invest in your mental wellbeing - for your sake and for the sake of others around you. Psychologist David Younger details in the following article that recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. Yep, I can vouch for that! Some briliant tips here; stay connected to family and friends, do things that bring you joy and get formal support if needed.. https://www.beyondblue.org.au/personal-best/pillar/the-first-year-after-bushfire-why-does-it-feel-so-hard-sometimes

Hi Wade – Welcome to the DisasterWISE Community :) Thanks for sharing info about the rapid response teams – I haven’t heard about it, but would love to learn more also. The ‘citizen’ mobile phone apps would be useful for remote communities – at the moment our community has a what’s app chat for emergencies only – a bit of an extension from the…[Read more]

The Power of Local Networks in the forum Community-Led Approaches 1 year, 4 months ago
Hi All - Just stumbled across this resource and found it incredibly valuable when thinking about local nertworks - although it focuses on local organisations, it could easily be read through a community-led lens. Don't have a local resilience network in your neighbourhood? Start one! If not you, who? If not now, when? https://www.nswmentalhealthcommission.com.au/sites/default/files/2021-11/GUIDE%20-%20LOCAL_ORG_Web%20Version%20-%2031%20October%202021.PDF
