The Arts Can Help  Us Recover from Disasters – Creatively

Following the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires, Fabrik Arts + Heritage in the Adelaide Hills facilitated numerous arts and writing workshops to support their fire-affected community. Projects like New Art New Walls helped families create paintings for their rebuilt homes, fostering connection and emotional healing. Creative recovery, a process where arts programs aid communities post-disaster, has shown significant benefits for individual and communal wellbeing. Despite the success and proliferation of such projects, there’s limited research on best practices. As climate change increases disaster frequency, proactive planning and resourcing for creative recovery are crucial to support affected communities effectively without overburdening the artists involved.

There was a statewide project run by Regional Arts Victoria after Black Satruday called Illuminated by Fire. These project were a way of bringing communities together and expressing what the fire meant to them. https://www.medialaunch.com.au/media-releases/42-regional-arts-victoria/115–illuminated-by-fire-regional-victorian-communities-fight-fire-with-art-
